Texas born composer Nik Phelps is based in Gent, Belgium. He has played with musical artists as diverse as Eric Johnson and Lou Rawls, Frank Sinatra and They Might Be Giants, Frank Zappa and Mary Martin, and he recorded for over 10 years with Tom Waits, playing on three soundtracks and five CDs. He has been scoring films since 1988, starting with the seminal San Francisco soundtrack group The Club Foot Orchestra, and he has been working in the animation field since 1995. In 1996 he founded the Sprocket Ensemble which combines live music and animated film. Nik creates music for animators such as Nina Paley, Bill Plympton, Lei Lei and Ivan Maximov, often programming their works at his screenings, and his favorite public speaking topics range from the outlining the important relationship between film, music and the creative ego to discussing the tricky world of IP rights.
